Butterfly Lapbook
Compassion International
September 30, 2012
One of my Sponsor children, Alisson, has a birthday coming up in November. I sent her a gift through Compassion, so that she can get things that she needs, but I wanted to make something special just for her, from me. She will be turning 9 years old, and I think of their transformation of breaking from poverty with the help of Compassion, similar to a Catapillar transforming into a beautiful Butterfly. The Butterfly is a illustration of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection.
Birth – Caterpillar (taking care of our daily needs)
Death – Coccoon (represents the tomb)
Resurrection – transfomed Butterfly (represents a new life)
I figured a Butterfly is a perfect idea for a birthday present, and for these children who need to be reminded about how God is transforming their lives, both spiritual and earthly needs.
Lapbook Design
At the bottom of my blog is links to the websites that I used to create this lapbook. I have also included the pages I created.
I used a two-pocket folder, and refolded to keep within the size requirements of Compassion. I then drew a picture of a Butterfly on the outside, with the middle of the butterfly on the fold, so half is on the front and half on the back. I then added her name and Mariposa (Spanish for Butterfly) on the front in a Butterfly font that I found. I added a few pictures of butterflies on the back of the folder, and the side tab to add a little color. I got these from the Scholastic website.

On the inside I added a pocket that holds a little 8 page coloring booklet on the Cycle of the Butterfly. I got this printout from Scholastic printables for free. I colored a little bit of the front cover to personize it for Alisson. I added a second pocket to hold a Butterfly Matching Game, depending on how many matching pieces you include you may want to use a larger pocket to hold them. I created the Butterfly Matching Game and printed them in color on card stock, and glued them to Scrapbook paper to make them more create. I used a little piece of scrap scrapbooking paper to wrap around the cards to hold them into smaller groups while shipping.
I added two Bible Verses to the inside: (translation from Bible Gateway)
2 Corintios 5:17
I also print “Mariposa” and Alisson’s information on the inside in different Butterfly fonts. (My handwritting is not the best, so printed to make easier to read). I also printed more of the Butterflies from Scholastic to put around on the inside.
I updated a couple of Butterfly printables, and put into Spanish, so they will not need to be translated. I included a Dot-to-Dot, an Addition-coloring page, a copy of the butterfly on the front and a couple other butterfly coloring pages. I added a couple of writing pages that I got from HomeSchoolShare.com. She can use these to practice writing, or even write a letter if she would like to.
The most important part of this lapbook is the letter that will go with it, to reminder her that God loves her, and is aways there for her. He loves her so much that he sent Compassion and her sponsor into her life. If you do not currently have a sponsor child, please take a moment to stop by Compassion and look at the children needing sponsors. They will change your life forever, and help you appreciate all that you have and all that you can give, expecially spirital encouragement to a child living in poverty.
