Valentine’s Day Lapbook
2013
With Valentine’s Day approaching quickly, I wanted to send to some of my Compassion Children something nice. After looking around, I decided to create a small little lapbook to send. I included a few coloring pages, stickers, and the history of Valentine day. I was able to find the history in a version with English on one side, and Spanish on the other. This worked out great for four of my girls are from Spanish speaking countries.
I was surprised to find out that Valentine day is not only celebrated in the United States, but around the world. There are a few variations, but for the most part they are the same.
History
Around 498 A.D., Pope Gelasius declared that February 14th would be St. Valentine’s Day. There are several variations regarding how it stated, with a mix of drama and romanticism. Some believe it was declared to cover up a pagan festival. The Catholic Church recognizes 11 Saint Valentines and St. Valentine’s Day celebrates at least three of them.
Some believe that Valentine ’s Day is on February 14th, because this was when Saint Valentine died or was buried. Others believe it was an attempt by the Catholic Church to cover up the pagan festival of fertility “Lupercalia” which began on the February 15th.

Next year, I plan on starting a little earlier, and plan on getting stickers and activity sheets after Valentine’s Day to hold for next year. I found a couple of stores that had some good items after I had already sent the package out. Hopefully they will still arrive before February 14th, but I am sure they will be happy no matter when they get there.
Here is some pictures of five of the lapbooks that I created. I split one page into two, and used on the front of the folders, and a separate on on the back. I used part of a third to cover the pocket of the folder on the inside.
