Day 5 – Giving back local

I love to create crafts or sew.  The last couple of years I have really enjoyed doing more sewing and quilting.

While I love Compassion International, and there is so much that I can tell you about it.  However, what I have really been spending my time doing is quilting. I wish that I could make some quilts and ship them to the children in the Compassion program, unfortunately that is not a possibility. I have a couple quilts I have made to take with me on my next trip.  However, I am just not sure when that will be.

So in the meantime,I looked for ways to help the less fortunate in my community.  For about nine months, I was a foster parent for three awesome girls.  While I raised five sons, girls are a totally different animal.

One of the young ladies, always was asking me to teach her how to sew.  She loved how I had made her dresses, bible covers, and she knew I loved to make quilts.  She was 11 at the time, so I purchased an sewing machine for her to use.  (Less bells and whistles than my machine).

Once we got the machine, her little sister, who had just turned 8, also wanted to learn to sew.  So off to figuring out a simple project for them.  Not their idea….

They loved how I made quilts, and they wanted to make a quilt for Project Linus.  A lady at our church was very involved, and the girls wanted to make one each to give.  So we looked thru my stash and they picked out some flannel to make the front quilt, and we used fleece for the back.   Simple 5″ squares.  We didn’t add binding, just sewed fronts together and flipped.  Then they added a little stitch in the ditch to quilt together.

They were so proud of their quilts and were excited to get them done and take to church.  Here are pictures that I can share.  Blue quilt is by the 11 year old, and the multi-color is by the 8 year old.

We did have arguments whose turn it was to sew, and how long they had to sew.  I loved this time, and showing them how to sew, and not get discouraged.

The 8 year old would sit down and sew together all kinds of fabric scraps, and make a”gift” and give to people, myself, my husband and my sons.  She was so proud.

The 11 year old and I got a jelly roll for her to make herself a quilt.  She got the blocks done, and sewn together, but we never got the batting and back attached before she had to go with her mother.  Maybe one day we can see each other again so we can finish the quilt. Or maybe I just need to finish and have ready for her, with a label about out time together.

I really enjoyed the time we had, but was sad, and they will always have a place in my heart!

See you tomorrow….
