During 2020 we will be doing blocks from the “One Hundred and one Patchwork Patterns” book by Ruby Short McKim. The book was published in 1931, and my husband’s maternal Grandmother learned to quilt from this book. These blocks are done in her honor.
This month’s block is Jack in the Box. “JACK in the Box is a crisp angular pattern almost as perky as its surprising name.” (McKim)
The original instructions were for a 10” finished block, Our block will finish at 12″ (12 1/2″ unfinished).
Fabric Requirements
Pink – 10″ x 20″
Blue – 13″ x 20″
Fabric Cutting
Assembly
HST – 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″ unfinished
Using one Pink and one Blue 7”” x 7”” pieces, draw a line from corner to corner on the back on the lighter fabric, creating an “X”.
- Stitch 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn lines, creating a double X (Black lines)
- Cut along the drawn lines, and then again vertical and horizontal halfway. (Cut on the Red lines
- Square up the HST to make sure they are 2 7/8″ square.
- Press open, and trim dog ears.
- Repeat using the other Pink and Blue 7” x 7” pieces
Reminder: that after stitching and cutting the 7” x 7” squares you will have 8 HST’s each. With a total of 16 from both HSTs.
Using 4 HST, layout and sew together to create 4 of these. Square up to 5 ¼” before connecting to other pieces.
Using the other pieces, layout in three rows as below and sew together.
Press Seams, and you have completed the Jack in the Box.
