The fifth block for 2021, is the Farmer’s Daughter. This block was released in the Kansas City Star on March 16, 1935, but has been around for a long time. It is a modification of the Dove in the Window block.
When published, this block used a template to create angled pieces, which resulted in several “Y” seams. I’ve created this block with no “Y” seams, and simple Half Square Triangles (HST) and squares, creating an easy block.
The block will finish at 15″ x 15″ (15 1/2″ x 15 1/2″ unfinished), as there are 5 columns and the pieces will be easier to cut.
Fabric Requirements
- Color A – 15″ x 12″
- Color B – 12″ x 12″
- Color C – 7″ x 7″
Fabric Cutting
Assembly
Step 1 – Eight HST – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ unfinished
Using a piece of each color 8″ x 8″ pieces, draw a line from corner to corner on the back on the lighter fabric, creating an “X”.
Stitch 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn lines, creating a double X (Black lines)
Cut along the drawn lines, and then halfway vertical and horizontal halfway. (Cut on the Red lines)
Square up the HST with your preferred method to make sure they are 3 1/2″ square.
Press open, and trim dog ears.
Step 2 – Assembly
Layout the pieces in the following layout
Sew the pieces together, making sure that your pieces stay in the correct layout. Press Seams.
You can use my method for Chain Piecing, or the method you prefer.
You have now completed the first March 2021 block, Farmer’s Daughter Block.
I look forward to seeing all your wonderful blocks! Make sure to post on the Facebook group! Remember to add the hashtag #FarmersDaughter.
