This block for April is called A Scrap Zig Zag. It was originally released in the Kansas City Star on October 25, 1955.

We will be creating two 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ unfinished blocks and matching two 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ pieces of fabric. You can create four of these blocks to have a full block. I will be doing these as opposites, but you can do them with scraps for each block.
Fabric Requirements
Color A (White)
Color B (Blue)
Color C (Red)
Fabric Cutting
NOTE: If you want to create 4 of the blocks, instead of 2, just double pieces A-C, and do not cut Piece D (6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″)
Assembly
Step 1 – 2″ x 2″ HST
Using Piece C (3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″) – one Color A (white) and one color piece
Place Right sides together
Stitch 1/4″ along all four sides of the square (red line is the stitching
Cut Diagonally from Corner to corner both directions (purple lines).
Press open towards the dark side, resulting in 4 HST.
Square up the HSTs using your favorite method to 2″ x 2″ .
- For different methods to square up your HSTs, check out the Half Square Triangles (HST) blog.
Repeat for the other color.
Step 2
Will create two smaller blocks, to avoid “Y” seams.
Chain piece the HST with Piece A (2″ x 2″), sewing in the following layout.
Press the seams towards Piece A.
You will have a total of 4 red/white & 4 blue/white
Step 3
Using the pieces created in Step 2 and Pieces B.
Match HST/Square piece with the opposite color of Piece B.
Sew in the following layout. Press towards Piece B (3 1/2″ x 2″)
Create four of both color combinations.
Square-up to 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″, making sure to trim from all four sides, not just one. Keep center the center.
Step 4 – Smaller blocks
Lay the four matching pieces matching the following layout, and sew the four-patch.
Press seams.
Repeat using Blue/White HST, piece A and Blue piece B.
Square-up to be 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.
Step 5 – Final assembly
Lay the two blocks and both Piece D in the following layout.
Sew the pieces together, and press seams.
You have completed the April 2021 block, A Scrap Zig Zag.
