Garden Walk – May 2021 BOM

This first block for May 2021 is called Garden Walk, it was released in the Kansas City Star on June 19, 1940.  This block could be easily done with templates or paper-pieced.  The instructions are for rotary cutting pieces.  If you use multiple colors you could feel like you are walking through a Garden.

This block will finish at 15″ x 15″ (15 1/2″ x 15 1/2″ unfinished).

Fabric Requirements

Color A (White) – 9” x 33”
Color B (Blue) – 7” x 13”
Color C (Red) – 3” x 33”

Fabric Cutting

Assembly

Step 1  – 4-patches

Using Piece A of both colors

Sew the long sides (33″) together with 1/4″ seams

Press seams towards the Darker color

Trim the end of the strip if needed.

Cut 3” wide strips, cutting 10 pieces.

Note: there is an extra 3″ to help with trimming, and cutting into pieces, so do not worry if you have a little extra.

Using two pieces, lay one and flip the second, so the colors are opposite in the 4-patch square.

Sew together, and repeat for 5 sets.

Press the seam open to reduce bulk.

Square up each piece to 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″

Step 2

Piece D – creating triangles.

Fold the piece in half to find the midpoint of the square. Finger press at one end to mark the center. Unfold.

Using a ruler, trim from the center point to one bottom corner.  Then trim from the center point to the other bottom corner

You will repeat for all four pieces of Fabric piece D.

Step 3

Using Piece B & C

Take Pieces B  cut both pieces the same, with Right sides up, cut diagonally in half. To create 4 identical triangles.

Take Pieces C cut both pieces the opposite direction of piece B. To create 4 identical triangles.

Step 4

Using Piece D, Triangle and Pieces B & C

Using one Piece of D, B & C

Layout the pieces in the following layout, make sure the top is straight across.

Carefully layover one side piece (blue) on to the center triangle (white). Make sure the top stays together.  It will extend beyond the bottom, this is ok.

Pin or clip the pieces together to make sure they do not shift when you sew 1/4″ seam.

Finger press, towards the outside piece (blue).

Sew the other side, by carefully laying the piece over the center, making sure the top center still matches.

Pin or clip the pieces together to make sure they do not shift when you sew 1/4″ seam.

Press towards the outside piece (blue), this will reduce the bulk at the center point.

Square-up square to 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, make sure that you trim from all four sides, making sure that you keep at least 1/4″ about the center point, so you do not lose the point when you sew the pieces together.

Repeat for the other three pieces, to have a total of 4 squares.

Step 5 – Final Assembly

Layout the pieces in the following layout.

Sew the pieces together.
