
The first block for September 2021 is Stepping Stones, it was originally posted in the Kansas City Star on September 09, 1931. This block could be made with sixty-four 1 12″ squares. We are going to assemble this block with Flying Geese, 4-patch and a few other blocks. The larger pieces make the block more accurate.
This block will finish at 12″ x 12″ (12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ unfinished).
Fabric Requirements
- White – 10″ x 16 1/2″
- Blue – 12″ x 9″
- Red – 4″ x 16 1/2″

Assembly
Step 1 – No-waste Flying Geese
Using Color A (white) of pieces A (4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″) and Color B (Blue) of piece B (2 3/8″ x 2 3/8″)
Draw a diagonal line across the back of the smaller squares

Place two Color B on opposite corners of Color A, right sides together, with the lines flowing together.

Stitch 1/4″ along both sides of the drawn lines

Cut along the drawn lines

Press Open

Using one piece, place one Color B on the corner, with the diagonal lines flowing into the middle of the triangles.

Stitch 1/4″ on each side of the line

Cut along the drawn line

Press both pieces open.

Repeat the last three steps to create the other two Flying Geese.
Square-up the Flying Geese to be 3 1/2″ x 2″, if you trim make sure that you trim from all sides, and make sure that there is 1/4″ seam allowance above the point.

Step 2 – No-waste Flying Geese (opposite)
Using Color B (Blue) of Piece A and Color A (White) of Pieces B.
Repeat the step in Step 1, using the opposite colors.

This will create 4 opposite Flying Geese, square-up the Flying Geese to 3 1/2″ x 2″

Step 3 – 3-Patch
Using Piece C (2″ x 3 1/2″), and the Flying geese created in Steps 1 and 2.
Layout one of each piece in the following layout.

Sew the three patch together.

Press towards Piece C (middle piece).
Repeat to create a total of 4 sets, all the same.
Step 4 – 4-Patch
Using Piece D of both colors
Sew the long sides (16 1/2″) together with 1/4″ seams

Press seams towards the Darker color
Trim the end of the strip if needed.
Note: there is an extra 1/2″ to help with trimming, and cutting into pieces, so do not worry if you have a little extra.
Cut Pieces of strips of 2″ wide. Cut 8 pieces.

Using two pieces, lay one and flip the second, so the colors to not match except.

Sew together, and repeat for 4 sets.

Press the seams.
Square up each piece to 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
Step 5 – Corner Blocks
Using the 4-patch created in Step 5 and pieces E and F.
Layout the pieces in the following layout.

Sew together.

Press seams towards pieces F (2″ x 3 1/2″ white)
Square-up to 5″ x 5″.
Repeat to create 4 sets.
Step 6 – Final Assembly
Using all pieces, layout in the following layout.

Sew the 9-patch together.
Press Seams.
You have now completed the Stepping Stones, a 4-patch and flying geese.
