Flying X – October 2021 BOM

The Second block for October is Flying X, it was originally in the Kansas City Star on October 26,1938.

The block we are going to do, is actually two of the blocks, with two solid squares as well.  You can make 4 sets of these and not use the solid pieces.

It is basically made with small squares and Half Square Triangles (HST).

This block will finish at 12″ x 12″ (unfinished 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″).

Fabric Requirements

Color A – 9″ x 20″ (white)

Color B – 8″ x 8″ (blue)

Color C – 8″ x 8″ (red)

Assembly

Step 1 – 2″ Half Square Triangles (HST) (1 1/2″ finished) (Blue/White)

Using Piece A both colors

Using one of each color of Piece A (6″ x 6″), draw a line from corner to corner on the back on the lighter fabric, creating an “X”.

Stitch 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn lines, creating a double X (Black lines)

Cut along the drawn lines, and then halfway vertical and horizontal halfway. (Cut on the Red lines)

Square up the HST with your preferred method to make sure they are 2″ x 2″ HST. 

Press towards the dark side.

Square-up to 2″ x 2″.  Press open, and trim dog ears.

Step 2 – 2″ HST (Red/White)

Using Pieces B both colors

Repeat Step 1 using Pieces B, to create a second color HST.

Square up to 2″ x 2″.

Step 3 – 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ pieced (Blue/White)

Using Pieces From Step 1 and Pieces C

Layout in the following layout. 

Sew the 16-patch together.

NOTE: You can use my method for  Chain Piecing, or the method you prefer.

Square-up to 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

Step 4 – 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ pieces (Red/White)

Using Pieces from Step 2 and Pieces D

Layout in the following layout

Sew the 16-patch together.

Square-up to 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

Step 5 – Final Layout.

Using Piece from Step 3 and Step 4 and Pieces E.

Layout in the following layout.

Sew the 4-patch together

Press the seams.

You have now completed the Second block for October 2021, Flying X.
