Week 2 – Row-By-Row – X-Blocks

The Row-by-Row quilt will be divided into 6 different sets of instructions, this is the second week, Row 3, X-Blocks.

To make my Row-by-Row quilt, I used the Island Batik Wonderous collection by Jerry Khiev, there are 20 different prints, and each was 1/2 yard. You could finish the quilt top with 20 different fat quarters or a variety of fabrics. I will be referencing the Item number of the Wonderous set.

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik, Schmetz, Hobbs, & Aurifil,

You can also use fabric in your stash to create the blocks. If you are using fat quarters, your cutting lengths may be different, so you will need to cut more strips of fabric.

Assembly

We are going to be making sets of Flying Geese using the No-waste method. For the Pink, we are going to need 4 sets of four flying Geese, and 3 sets of four of the Green. The alternation starts and ends with the Pink.

Step 1

Using 1 of the 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ Background and 4 of the 2 3/8″ x 2 3/8″ squares of the Pink fabric (Color P).

  • Draw a diagonal line across the back of the smaller squares (2 3/8″ x 2 3/8″)
  • Place two Color A on opposite corners of Background, right sides together, with the lines flowing together.
  • Stitch 1/4″ along both sides of the drawn lines
  • Cut along the drawn lines
  • Press Open
  • Using one piece, place one Color B on the corner, with the diagonal lines flowing into the middle of the triangles.

NOTE: You will repeat these steps again for the second half.

  • Stitch 1/4″ on each side of the line, then cut along the drawn line
  • Press pieces open.

You will have 4 Flying Geese.

You will have 4 Flying Geese.

Repeat Step 1 – three more times to have a total of 16 Flying Geese with the background/Pink pieces

Step 2 – Flying geese with Green

  • Using 1 of the 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″ Background and 4 of the 2 3/8″ x 2 3/8″ squares (green)
  • Repeat the steps in Step 1, except you will only make 3 sets of four flying geese, for a total of 12 flying Geese.

Step 3

  • To make sure that the squares go together easy, you will need to trim all of the Flying geese to be 2″ x 3 1/2″. Make sure that you leave 1/4″ about the center point of the flying geese, so you do not loose your points, and trim equally off both sides.

Step 4 – Pink X-Block

Using the following pieces:
– Four – Pink Flying Geese
– Four – 2″ x 2″ squares of pink fabric
– One – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ square of pink fabric

Layout the pieces in the following
– 2″ x 2″ squares in the corners
– 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ square in the center
– Flying Geese in the center outside, making sure to put the points towards the center block

  • Sew the 9 pieces together, similar to a 9 patch block.
  • Press the seams

You will repeat this 3 more times for the Pink X-Block for a total of Four pink X-Blocks

Step 5 – Green X Block

Using the following pieces:
– Four – Green Flying Geese
– Four – 2″ x 2″ squares of green fabric
– One – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ square of green fabric

Layout the pieces in the following
– 2″ x 2″ squares in the corners
– 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ square in the center
– Flying Geese in the center outside, making sure to put the points towards the center block
– Sew the pieces together, similar to a 9-block
– Press seams

You will repeat this 2 more times for the Green X-Block for a total of three Green X-Blocks

Step 6 – Row Assembly
