Week 6 – Row-by-Row – Log Cabin

The Row-by-Row quilt will be divided into 6 different sets of instructions, this is the sixth week, Log Cabin blocks.

To make my Row-by-Row quilt, I used the Island Batik Wonderous collection by Jerry Khiev, there are 20 different prints, and each was 1/2 yard.  You could finish the quilt top with 20 different fat quarters or a variety of fabrics.  I will be referencing the Item number of the Wonderous set.

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik, Schmetz, Hobbs, & Aurifil,

You can also use fabric in your stash to create the blocks. If you are using fat quarters, your cutting lengths may be different, so you will need to cut more strips of fabric.

You can layout your pieces in the way you want, with the lighter side going from lightest in the center and work your way out.  Same with the darker side, with the lightest in the center working your way out.

Assembly

Using one of each size piece, layout your fabric pieces in the following layout.

You will start with the pink center piece, and sew the Green 1 1/4″ x 2″ piece to the right side of the center piece.

Press the seam.

Then sew the green piece (matching) to the top of the Pink/Green piece.

You will continue around the block in a counter-clock direction.

Next piece will be the lightest green sew to the left side of the pieces.

Continue sewing the pieces as you go around the center pink.  Each piece should match the length of the block.

Here is the order the pieces will be added.

Once you have gone all the way around the block and attached all the pieces, you have completed your first log cabin block.

You will need to repeat this process another six times, to create a total of seven Log Cabin blocks.

Assembly of the Row

When you have completed all seven Log Cabin blocks, you can lay them out to figure out the way you want your blocks to be sewn together.

Option 1 –

Option 2 –

Option 3 – Your own layout

Depending on how you want them to look on your quilt, will depend on the way you want to sew them together.

Make sure to press your seams as you go.  You may want to look at the rows above or below your Log Cabin blocks to know what would be the best direction to press your seams.

You have now completed Row 4, Log Cabin blocks for the Row-By-Row Challenge.

Come back next week for assembly directions.

I look forward to seeing all your wonderful Log Cabin rows!  Make sure to post on the Facebook group!
