The Island Batik Ambassador challenge for August 2024, was to make a mini quilt. A quilt between 12″ x 24″ to 24″ x 24″.

I loved the quilt that I made in July and decided to make the quilt as a mini quilt. While that seems like it should be easier, but it is actually more work. A little off on a quarter seam, is a big difference on a small quilt than a larger quilt.
I decided to use the same material that I did for the July quilt. I used some of the Island Batik Stash Builder sets and black fabric.
The fabric and batting were given to me free from Island Batik and its partners. These partners include Hobbs Batting, Aurifil Thread, Oliso iron, Studio 180 Designs, and Schmetz Needles. This was part of my role as a 2024 Island Batik Ambassador.
In the July Quilt, I used the Studio 180 Designs, Tucker Trimmer I on the quilt. This tool is designed to help trim down triangles and squares, quarter-square triangles, and Half Square Triangles. This tool is so easy to use and comes with instructions to creating these different blocks. You can find lots of videos by Deb Tucker in techniques to use this tool.

I decided to also use the Studio 180 Designs “Winged Clipper I” on this quilt. There is 5 stars, and instead of using Half Square triangles for these, I decided to use Flying Geese. The Winged Clipper makes squaring up flying geese so easy. These flying geese were going to be 3″ x 1 1/2″ (finished). Trimming these was so much easier with this ruler.

I used the No-waste 4-at-a-time Flying Geese method. This created the set of four for each star. I then used the Winged Clipper to trim them down to the correct size. When making these with the ruler you can make them a little bigger, just to give more room for trimming.
I created the five different sets of flying Geese. Next, I cut a 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ square of the five fabrics. Matched each with black fabric and created 4-at-a-time Half Square triangles. I used the Tucker Trimmer to square the squares to 2″ x 2″ squares.

Next, I cut three sets of 33 different triangles from Island Batik fabrics Stash Builders. These were the same fabrics that I used in the July Quilt.

Matching a matching a color triangle with a black triangle, I create the Half Square Triangles. I again used the Tucker Trimmer to square up each Half Square Triangle to 2″ x 2″

I created the five stars, adding a random Half Square triangle in each corner of the blocks, and sewed together.

Then Laying out the fabrics on my table, I organized the Half Square triangles into the pattern. Then sewed the fabric together. I separated the sections into grids to sew together, so I didn’t have any “Y” seams.

I added a 1″ border of black around the top, and then added a 1 1/2″ purple border around. This was the same purple that I used in the July quilt, and this was some scrap left over. The first Border was 1/2″ when sewn, and the purple was a 1″ border when sewn.

I had left over Hobbs Premium Black Cotton Batting, from the July quilt. It was the right size for what I needed. I decided to use the Mini-Quilt on the window of the door between the house and my sewing studio. I wanted the quilt to be a little stiffer, so I used two layers of the black batting. The black batting also added a little more privacy between the two rooms.
I quilted the top with Aurifil Thread. I Used a pantograph that I received free as part of Quilting Pantographs rewards program, called “Sewing Needle and Thread“. This design is perfect for my sewing room. This design is part of their GridE2E and can easily be combined with other GridE2E designs.

Here is my completed quilt on my Sewing Studio Door.

My Marvelous Mini Quilt finished at 21″ x 24″.

If you enjoyed my mini-quilt, please check out the other Island Batik Ambassador’s mini-quilts. They are a very create group of quilters.
Make sure to come back next Month (September) and check out our Blog Hop. There will be lots of new fabrics and a different technique than I have used in the past.
