I had been seeing a lot of people posting about Angel Gowns, and how they had made them from their wedding gowns, or from one given to them. There have been so many sad stories of grandparents going to look for a gown for the baby to wear for the funeral. Sometimes people don’t understand how important it is to have closure and bury their lost Angel. The gowns show someone cares enough to take the time to make them one. They do not have to be fancy or elaborate.
So at our Church garage sale in September, I saw a wedding dress hanging, and I asked the lady in charge, if the gown did not sale I would like to know if I could have it to make Angel Gowns. I had been wanting to make some, but did not have a wedding gown that I could use.
Well, I got a call, and said that the person who had donated the wedding gown wanted me to have it. They had heard of the wedding gowns, and wanted me to use it.
So I picked the gown up at church on Sunday and took it home. In the excitement of getting started, I forgot to take a picture of the front of the gown, but it was beautiful. I did take pictures of the detail on the back.
I started to take the gown apart at the seams, while trying to save the beaded work. There is a lot of stitching in those gowns.
Once I got it apart I found a free pattern on the web, by 7pinedesigns. They are very easy and fast gowns, and they added a new Vested gown for boys. She has on her site how to make Angel Cocoons for the very tiniest of babies.
They come in 4 sizes, Newborn, Preemie, Tiny and Micro. I made a couple of each of the different sizes. Here is my first attempt, not made with white on white cotton fabric and added some lace and ribbon. I know I took pictures of the angel gowns. Maybe the pictures are hid on my phone somewhere, or my actual camera. If I find them, I will add later.
The Tiny and Micro are so little they were a challenge.
I did add some of the bead work from the wedding gown to the front of Angel gowns, to make it mean a little more.
If you have an old wedding gown, or come across one at a thrift store, this is a great way to give back to the local community. Show me some pictures of ones you have done.
