Assembly – Option A

This option is to make the pumpkin with 2 ½” squares.

All Eight 3″ x 3″ squares

Draw a line diagonally down the center of the background fabric, then draw a ¼” line on each side of the centerline.

Using 2 of the cream and the 4 multi-color pieces.  Put the front sides together matching one cream and one multi-color piece, stitch down on the left ¼” line of each piece.   Repeat using the other cream and one multi-color piece.

Open the squares, and finger press open the seams.

Matching the unsewn side of the cream piece to a different multicolor piece.

Stitch down the right ¼” line.  Repeat for the other cream and last multicolor piece.

Finger press open.  Carefully cut down the centerline of the cream (making sure to keep the multi-color out of the way) for both pieces.  You now have 4 squares, with a triangle.

With right-sides together, cut the extra side of the multi-color square, leaving a triangle piece.   You do not need these triangle pieces, they can be used for another project. Press open.

Using the Green and Cream 3″ x 3″ squares, stitch on both the left and right ¼” seam lines.  Cut down the center line.

Square up the HST using your preferred method.  Using HST ruler or press open and square-up to 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares.

Assembly – Option B

This option is to make the pumpkin with 2 ½” strips.

(Made by Belinda)

 All six 3″ x 3″ squares

Draw a line diagonally down the center of the background fabric.

Match one cream and one multi-color piece, right sides together, stitch ¼” on the right and left side of the center line drawn on the back.  Repeat for another cream/Multi-color. Repeat for a cream and green piece.

Cut down the centerline of all three sets. Making 6 HST, press open.

Square up the HST using your preferred method.  Using HST ruler or press open and square-up to 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares.

Layout – Option B

Using one 6 ½” x 2 ½” strips, use the matching HST, and attach the each end of the strip.  Making a 10 ½” x 2 ½” strip. Making sure the multi-color sides of the HST are matched to the strip.  (See layout)

Repeat for the other strip.  Press seams.

Layout the pieces according to the pattern. Stitch top row together, then stitch the strips together, making sure to rotate the direction of your stitching.  From top to bottom, then bottom to top. This helps keep the strips from getting a curve as you stitch them together.

Press the seams, making sure that the seams will nest between the top row and the strip rows.  Sew the two pieces together, press seams.

Your block is done.
