November 2019 – Log Cabin / Maple Leaf BOM

It is fall here in the United States, and most of the trees are starting to into beautiful colors.  In the States November is when we celebrate Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday of the month, and is a time of family. I wanted to create a block that could be used anywhere in the world. So this months block is a combination of a Maple leaf and a Log Cabin block. The Maple leaf is for the fall colors, and the Log Cabin is for the time with family (or in the US, the pilgrims homes).

Fabric

  • 6 strips of 1 ½” x 25” (for the log cabin parts)
    • Mix of two sets of colors, or 3 light and 3 dark
  • White (for background of Leaf – 12” x 3 ½” piece
  • Leaf – 20” x 4 ½” piece

Cutting Pieces

Log Cabin pieces, you will need two strips of each color, depending on how you want your colors to layout.  Cutting cart is for Dark outside, into lighter middle, Red on Right/Green on Left.

Note:  You may want to cut piece J – diagonally depending on your fabric design

Assembly

We will create the Maple leaf in the middle and then work our way around it for the Log Cabin part.

Maple Leaf

Using pieces J and one K.  Cut one piece K diagonally to create two triangles.

Sew one triangle to each side of piece J.  Creating a square. You will want to square up the square to make sure it is 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″.

Using the remaining four 3″ x 3″ squares of the White and Leaf to create 4 HST.  Draw a line diagonal line on the two white pieces. Lay the white on to top of the Leaf pieces, with right sides together.  Stitch down 1/4″ on both sides of the lines. Cut down the drawn line, to create 4 HST. Press open.

Layout the white/leaf fabric in the following layout.

Sew the pieces together and press seams.

Square the block to be 6 ½” x 6 ½”.

Log Cabin

Using the Maple leaf as the center of the block, start by adding the pieces around the block, starting at the bottom and going clockwise add the pieces. Using the light to dark colors.

Going Green, Green, Red, Red, continuing that pattern around the block.  This is the order that you use the Pieces.

G, F, F, E, E, D, D, C, C, A, A, B

Press as you add each strip around the Maple Leaf.

Once done, you have created this months BOM, Log Cabin/Maple Leaf.

Your block is now assembled, and ready to post on the Quilting BOM FaceBook group.
