March 2020 – Milky Way

During 2020 we will be doing blocks from theOne Hundred and one Patchwork Patterns”  book by Ruby Short McKim.  The book was published in 1931, and my husband’s maternal Grandmother learned to quilt from this book.  These blocks are done in her honor.

This month’s block is the Milky Way. A fun block with lots of little pieces.

The original instructions were for a 15” finished block using templates for the pieces.  Our block will finish at 12″ (12 1/2″ unfinished). I adjusted the pattern to include a 6th column and 6th row, so the pieces could be easily divided, to make a 12” block.

Fabric Requirements

  • Purple – 2″ x 33″
  • Yellow – 2″ x 33″
  • Blue – 12″ x 12″
  • White – 12″ x 15″

Assembly

Four Patch – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Sew the 1 1/2″ x 32″ strips of Purple and yellow together.

Press seams to the darker fabric.

Cut the strip into 1 1/2″ pieces.  You will need 18 of these.

Using two pieces rotate one piece so that the purple and yellow are together, while making sure that the same fabric do not match.

Sew 1/4″ seam and press seams, each square should finish at 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″, 9 total squares.

Square up the squares to be 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

HST (Half Square triangles) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Using 3″ x 3″ pieces of Blue & White pieces, place right sides together.  Draw a line diagonally down the middle. Stitch 1/4″ on both sides of the line.  Cut down the centerline, creating 2 HST.

Square up the HST using your favorite method, and then press open.

Repeat these steps for 9 pieces of Blue/White fabric.  Creating a total of 18 HST.

Layout

Lay the pieces according to the pattern.  Making sure that the pieces are in the correct position.

Sew the pieces together, you can use my method for the Chain Piecing, or the method you prefer.

Recommend double checking as you sew to make sure that the pieces don’t get turned in error.

Press Seams, and you have completed the March BOM, Milky Way Block.

I look forward to seeing all your wonderful blocks!  Make sure to post on the Facebook group!
