2020 Quilting BOM – Final Assembly

2020 – Final 20 Blocks

Over the past 6 months, we have worked on 20 blocks from the 101 Patchwork Patterns by Ruby McKim.

Now is the time to assemble the blocks into a quilt.

If you sew the blocks together, with no sashing and not border, the quilt top will measure 48 1/2″ x 60 1/2″, when you assemble 4 blocks across and 5 rows.

You can add a 1″ sashing between the blocks (using a 1 1/2″ strips), to give a look like this. Resulting in a quilt top of 53 1/2″ x 66 1/2″

Black 1″ Sashing (1 1/2″ stips)

White 1″ Sashing (1 1/2″ strips)

The way I decided to assemble my top was with the “Attic Window” look.

Attic Window with 5″ border
  1. Adding a 2 1/2″ strip of brown on the left side.
  2. Adding a 2 1/2″ HST of Brown and White to a 2 1/2″ strip of white.
  3. Then adding to the bottom of the block
  • Then Add a 1 1/2″ strip of block on the brown and white.

Sewing the blocks into a row of 4 across.

Then add a black 1 1/2″ strip to the right side of the row.

The first row will need to have a 1 1/2″ strip added to the top of the row (do not do this to the other rows, as the black is  already attached.

Sew all the rows together. (5 rows)

Then add a 5″ border along the outsides to block in the “Attic Windows”.    This quilt finished at 70″ x 84″

Original Attic Window Layout plan

This was my planning layout, as you can see I moved the blocks around as I was laying out, to separate the darker blocks and lighter blocks from each other.  I did row one with Dark/light/Dark/Light row and then Light/Dark/Light/Dark on the next and then back and forth.

It really depends on your blocks how you lay them out.  You may want to just sew together, or add a sashing or get creative.  Depending on the size you want for your finished quilt.

As you are able to complete your quilt tops (quilted or not), please post your quilt tops to the Facebook group, so we can see all the variations to the colors, and how different colors look together.

This is the last block in the original 20 blocks for 2020 for the Quilting BOM group.  As we increased the frequency to weekly, as several members were under “Stay at home orders” so the blocks helped relieved their stress.  We will continue more blocks from the 101 Patchwork Patterns, by Ruby McKim, for the balance of 2020, however, at a slower pace of one maybe two blocks a month.  So if you need to make a bigger quilt or didn’t make some of the blocks, there will be more options to add to your top.

I will continue to make videos for harder blocks as needed.  If there are any blocks or techniques you would really like to do, please drop me an email or post a comment on the Facebook group! Let continue to have fun with the traditional blocks.

When I get the quilt top quilted, I will post a completed picture.
