February 2022 – Row by Row Challenge

Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Row by Row blog hop.  Our challenge was to create a row by row quilt at least lap size using the new fabric we were sent from the Fall collection.  I was sent the Wonderous collection by Jerry Khiev.

The colors in the Wonderous collection are greens and pinks and were so much fun to work with. I also received two foundation fabrics that I used in the quilt.  These fabrics were so fun to work with, and I enjoyed each step along the process.

Using Electric Quilt 8, I imported the fabrics to see what they might look like.  Here was my original plan.  The layout changed a little as I assembled the rows. I want to create a quilt that anyone could make.

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik, Schmetz, Hobbs, & Aurifil,

I decided to break the rows down into 5 sets.

9-Patch blocks, three rows
– I created these using strips of fabric instead of 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares.  Make the process so much easier.

X-Block
– Created the X with the no-waste flying geese method.

Arrows and Hour Glass blocks
– Created the row with the Arrows, and more no-waste flying geese.  It only needs 7, so you have an extra block.
– Hour Glass blocks, were easy to create, created them in a group of 8 at a time, so you do have two extra at the end.  You could do them two and four at a time to get the 14 you need.

Flying geese – three rows

By this point if you were not sure how to make Flying geese, you have the chance to make 84 more. I did figure out after doing the first row, that I had my colors backwards, but still love how they looked.

Christmas Trees
– used 7 different green fabrics to create the trees.
– using some HST and strips of fabric

Log Cabin – 7 blocks
– Started with pink in the middle for the “heart of the home” and worked my way out.

I laid out the blocks in the order that I want to sew them together, giving me options to move them around. (They were taped to my wall, that is the green pieces at the end of the rows)

I then sewed the rows together to create my quilt top.  This was when I decided I like the look without the borders.

I decided to have some fun with the back of the quilt, and used 3 1/2″ strips of different lengths from the fabric to create a fun back.

I used the Hobbs Heirloom Polyester Batting that was sent to me by Hobbs.

I used Aurifil 50-wt thread to piece the top and to quilt, using a Schmetz 80/20 needle.

I quilted the quilt together using a Designs by JuJu, Edge-to-Edge embroidery design of Hearts and flowers on my Juki 500e embroidery machine.  It went together quickly.

Later this week I will post instructions for one row of the Row-by-Row, and then the rest of the next couple of weeks.

Thank you to Island Batik, Hobbs Batting Aurifil Thread and Schmetz for providing me with the materials to make this quilt.
