May 2022 The Triangle Tricks Challenge

Our Island Batik challenge for May is The Triangle Tricks Challenge which was designed to take us out of our comfort zone with square or rectangle blocks and have us work with triangles.

I used a Dresden Ruler to create my quilt for the challenge. While they are not completely triangle, they are close and were fun to make.

I used the Island Batik Blue Stash builder set, that was given to me. They were 5″ strips, and I was able to shift the ruler to get them almost side by side. They are pretty blue’s and were fun to work with. They created a bright quilt.

I used the Island Batik Oyster fabric for my neutral off-white fabric.

I layed the rows out, and cut the strips one at a time, flipping the ruler as I worked down the strip of fabric, to get 8 pieces of each color. I also cut 8 of the Oyster fabric for the top and bottoms of the rows.

Each row has two sets of the fabric sets, for a total of 128 blue Dresden pieces, and 8 oyster pieces.

I then laid them out in the colors that I wanted for each row, selecting a light and then dark. I then folded the pieces together, in groups of two to sew together, so I could chain piece the strips.

I added a light piece to both end of the strip. The strip will be a little off, as I trimmed the oyster pieces later. I pressed the fabric towards the darker of the fabrics.

I then attached a 3″ strip of Oyster down the side of the blue.

I pressed the seams towards the oyster fabric, as this resulted in less bulk.

I then repeated for the other three rows. adding a row of oyster between each strip. I did switch each row to go from light to dark, and dark to light.

I switched the rows back and forth, so the points were together, and the wide parts were together. You can keep them to same each row or flip back and forth.

As I sewed the rows together, I trimmed the top and bottom Oyster pieces to make a flat top. Then sewed the strips together.

After all the strips were together, I then added a 3″ strip of fabric to the top, bottom and sides. When I was binding, I wish I had made the sides a little wider, as the end Dresden pieces make the top and bottom appear wider than the sides. I did add miter corners to the outside border.

Junior was sleeping below my design wall.

I had a piece of the Hobbs Polyester Batting left from a previous quilt, and it was just the right size for the quilt. Hobbs had given me a queen size.

I used black fabric for the back, and then quilted together using an edge-to-edge embroidery design. The design is called Alchemy by Designs by JuJu, and has triangles and circles in the design. The design fit really well on the blue fabric.

I then trimmed the back fabric, leaving 2″ strip around the quilt top, so that I could fold over and create a self-binding edge.

Here is the completed quilt.

I assembled and quilted with the “Carrara Black/White” Aurifil Color Builder.

Thank you to Island BatikHobbs Batting Aurifil Thread and Schmetz for providing me with the materials to make this quilt.

The idea for this layout came from Missouri Star Quilt Company, Dresden Coin Purse.
