Berry Crush Blog Hop

Jennifer Thomas of Curlicue Creations is unveiling another one of her distinctive designs. She invited me to participate in a blog hop to showcase her new patterns. I instantly agreed. I had already chosen one of her designs for my October Island Batik By Annie Challenge. I decided to make the Out to Lunch 2.0 bag.

The Berry Crush Collection

The fabric I used comes from the Berry Crush Collection. It is a signature line by Jerry Khiev, created for Jennifer Thomas of Curlicue Creations. The collection features 20 different fabrics, and from these, I chose eleven to create a wall hanging for my office. Jennifer generously provided these fabrics free of charge. For the background, I used Island Batik Neutral Flour. I received it as part of my role as an Island Batik Ambassador.

Planning and Design

To plan the layout of my wall hanging, I utilized Electric Quilt 8. I wanted something to complement the butterfly images that already decorate my office. So, I decided to use a butterfly design. This decision came about thanks to a Butterfly AccuQuilt die I had purchased last year.

I selected five fabrics for the butterfly motifs and four fabrics for 9 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ squares. Each block could be made with a 10″ square of fabric. Assembling the butterfly pieces was simple after cutting them out. Each block, once sewn, measured 9 1/2″ x 9 1/2″.

Assembly and Borders

Once all five butterflies and four squares were ready, I arranged the blocks to find a pleasing layout.

I inserted a 1 1/2″ Flour strip between the blocks before sewing them together. I added a border around the outside as well.

For the border, I added a 2 1/2″ strip. Although I initially considered adding a 3″ outer border, I ultimately preferred the look with just the pink border.

Quilting and Finishing Touches

To quilt the piece, I used a Butterfly Flip pantograph design. I purchased it from Quilting Pantographs. It was an ideal match for this project. For thread, I chose Aurifil Dusty Rose Pink #2452. It harmonizes with the Berry Crush fabrics. The thread provides subtle contrast on the Flour background.

I finished the quilt with binding made from the Flour fabric. While attaching the binding, I added an extra strip to the back. This created a pocket for a dowel rod. Now it can hang on my wall.

Final Thoughts and Acknowledgements

The finished wall quilt measures 34 1/2″ x 34 1/2″. I look forward to enjoying it in my workspace every day.
