Jennifer Thomas of Curlicue Creations recently introduced a new collection Sunflower Spice, designed by Jerry Khiev. When she invited me to join the blog hop, I was delighted to say yes.
Jennifer Thomas sent me strips from all 20 pieces in the collection, and Island Batik provided neutral Foundation fabrics for the quilt. Both were supplied to me at no cost for this blog hop.

For this project, I made a wall hanging using Studio 180 Designs – Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star, a tool that I had bought a year earlier but had not yet tried.

This ruler makes it possible to create precise stars in 10 finished sizes, ranging from 3” to 12”. It also includes pattern suggestions for combining one or more of those sizes in a wall hanging.
Although the pattern is designed for two-color stars, I wanted a scrappier look so I could showcase more of the fabrics.

My original choice for the neutral background had a stronger blue tone than I wanted, so I switched to a different neutral Foundation fabric I had received while serving as an Island Batik Ambassador.
The instructions explain how to cut strips for two-tone stars, but because I wanted each star to look different, I did some extra calculations to make multiple sets of two-color pieces. For the largest star, the main fabric uses a 3 ¼” strip, so I started with several strips at that width and then cut them into the smaller sections needed.
In this strip set, the neutral fabrics were placed opposite the Sunflower Spice fabrics to form the opposite sides of the stars.

As I assembled the stars, I made sure to press all the seams in the same direction to reduce bulk.

I made a list of the strip sizes, and quantities needed for each star. For example, the 12” star, has two different background fabrics at 4 ¾” and two color fabrics at 3 ¼”. As you cut using the instructions, you cut them into strips based on the color fabric strips. I cut one at 3 ¼”, one at 3”, one at 2 ½” and continued to do different sizes. I didn’t work on the block sizes in order.
The 5”, 4” and 3” stars have multiple blocks, so I made sure to keep them separated and didn’t do the same colors on each set. Not all fabric was unique, but this approach helped maintain the scrappy look.
With these multiple blocks, I arranged the stars and worked to make sure they were different. Here are my two 5” blocks before they were sewn together.

After sewing the blocks, I trimmed them to the correct size. When using the Studio 180 rules, the pieces are cut larger than needed, so they can be trimmed precisely for accuracy. Here is one of the 5” blocks.

The trimmed block to 5 ½” x 5 ½” unfinished and finishes at 5”.

When the seams around the block are pressed in the same direction, the back looks like this and has less bulk.

Once all the blocks were finished, I arranged them out on my design wall. I rotated the stars until I liked the layout.

The layout includes a few strips of background fabric, which are added before sewing the quilt together in sections.

I used one of the Sunflower Spice fabrics, to create a 1” finished border.

For the second border, I made four matching 4” stars and paired them with one of the background fabrics to create a 4” wide border.

I added a third border using 2 ½” strips of blue Sunflower Spice fabric.

I quilted the quilt using a design from Quilting Pantographs called Kansas Sunflower. I thought this design was a good fit for the Sunflower Spice fabric collection.
I used Variegated thread by Aurfil, for the front and back from the Passionflower collection, 3770. This is a light blue and white variegated thread. Very Pretty. The back was white Island Batik fabric, but the light outside makes the picture look grayer.

For the binding, I decided to use some of the leftover strips from the Sunflower Spice Collection to make a scrappy binding. I used the Accuquilt Go! Scrappy Binding 2 ½” (2” finished die) that I purchased last year.

After finishing the first wall hanging, I realized that I had enough strips left of fabric to create a second Wall hanging. This time, I chose black fabric as my background instead of the lighter neutrals.
The black background really makes the Sunflower Spice fabrics stand out.

I used the same layout for the second wall hanging and used some of the light blue fabric to offset the stars in the middle to the black borders. I added a fourth border of the black fabric.

The black fabric changes the look dramatically. I also used more scrappy binding to finish this wall quilt.
For the second wall hanging, I chose another design from Quilting Pantographs called Sunflowers for Ukraine, a free design pattern, that also paired nicely with the Sunflower Spice fabric collection.
For the front and back, I used Aurifil variegated thread in Spider Lily 4652, a black, gray, and white blend.

Here are the two finished Sunflower Spice Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Wall hangings. The Light-background version is hanging in my quilting studio, and the black-background is in my husband’s office.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my quilt projects that I made with the Island Batik fabric Sunflower Spice collection by Jerry Khiev for Curlicue Creations. Be sure to visit the other designers’ projects in the Sunflower Spice Blog Hop.
