January – Snowflake BOM

Fabric needed

Blue & White

Need 2 – 8″ Squares of each color   (can make square a little large to help with trimming, to make sure seams are ¼”

You will make 16 – 3 ½” HST (Half-square triangles) of the Blue/White. (Finished 3” square)

On your 8” fabric square, draw a line down from corner to corner.  Sew 1/4″ on each side of the line.

Cut along the drawn lines, and then again vertical and horizontal halfway lines.

A good practice is to go ahead and square up the HST to make sure they are 3 1/2″ square.  This helps make sure the block goes together smoothly and accurately.

Option 1 – Use a Triangle Square up Ruler, to square the block before you press open, easiest way.

Option 2 – Use a ruler to measure and square up the pressed open square.

While this step is not required, it does help make sure that all the blocks are the correct size.

Next step is to press open all the squares, by pressing the seam towards the blue (or darker side).

If you squared using the triangle method, you will have the “dog tails” on the corners that you can snip off.

Lay out the half square triangles based on the pattern, and then sew each row together, than sew the rows together.

Double check that your layout is correct.  When I went to take the picture I noticed that I had several the wrong way.  A picture sometimes makes it easier to see these errors.

Sew the blocks together using chain piecing.

Press the seams so that they will nest with the next row.

I.e. Press rows one and three the same direction, and rows two and four the opposite way.

Sew the rows together.  Make sure you still them laid the correct way, as you may have moved them when you were pressing.  (Note this is from experience).

Press all the seams towards the bottom (or in the same direction).

  1. Your directions yields a 12.5” block. What would be the instructions if the block needs to be 10.5” then 10” finished?
