June 2019 ~ Sailboat BOM

Fabric

White – (sails) 5 ½” square
Light blue – 14” x 10” piece
Brown – (boat) 13” x 5” piece
Dark Blue – (water) 15” x 4” piece

Cutting Pieces

Note: May use a 3 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ Dark Blue piece instead of the four 3 1/2″ squares.

Assembly

Sails – Half Square Triangles (HST)

5 1/2″ Square of White and Light Blue

Place the two 5 ½” squares together, right sides facing each other.

Sew ¼” along the edge outside edges of the squares, all the way around.

NEED TO ADD PICTURE…..

Line up your ruler from one corner to the opposite corner, and cut diagonal in one direction.

Then, without picking the squares up, cut the squares on the diagonal in the other direction.

Square up the HST using your favorite method, and then press open

You will have 4 HST of White/Light Blue

Boat Pieces – Half Square Triangles (HST)

4 ½” square of Light Blue and Brown

Place two squares together, right sides facing each other.   Draw a line from one corner to the opposite, then sew 1/4″ on both sides of the line.

Cut along the drawn line, to create two HST.

Square up the HST using your favorite method, and then press open.

    You will have 2 HST of Brown/Light blue

Layout the pieces to match layout.

Sewing Pieces together

Sew Pieces

1 to 2         3 to 4
5 to 6         7 to 8
9 to 10 11 to 12
13 to 14 * 15 to 16 *

(If using a single piece for the dark blue, you can skip these steps)

Press seams open, so they will nest in next step. Press toward pieces, 1,3,6,8,9,11,14,16

  Sew pieces
   1/2 to 3/4
5/6 to 7/8
9/10 to 11/12
  13/14 to 15/16 *

 Press seams open, pressing toward pieces 2,7,10,16, so the pieces will next in the next step.

Lay the pieces out to make sure that you still have the same layout, and that the pieces did not get switched around.    

NOTE: For a easy way to keep the pieces in the correct order, check out my blog, Chain Piecing Blocks.

Pin the rows together, double checking that your layout is still correct. Nest the seams to help with matching points, and sew.

Press seams all in one direction.
