During 2020 we will be doing blocks from the “One Hundred and one Patchwork Patterns” book by Ruby Short McKim. The book was published in 1931, and my husband’s maternal Grandmother learned to quilt from this book. These blocks are done in her honor.
The Weathervane is the first block that we are doing, and includes HST (Half Square Triangles) and Flying Geese. The original instructions were for a 12” finished block using templates for the pieces. This is the size our blocks will be as well.
Fabric Requirements
Dark – 5″ square (center)
Orange – 10″ x 21″ (outside edges)
White – 10″ x 10″ (updated 02/01/2020)
Yellow – 5 1/2″ x 15″

- Repeat step 3 for the other piece
- Square-up the Flying geese to 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″, makings sure to have ¼” seam allowance above the white point.

Assemble the pieces according to the layout

- Press your seams, and your block is done.

Thank you for joining us for this January 2020 block of the month!
We will have two blocks for January, so stay tuned for the next block mid-month!
It would be helpful if I knew which directions to press the seams.

Hello Judy, I try to add the best way to press the seams in my videos, some of the my instructions do not have it, where others do. I will try to remember to add that. 🙂

Is there a specific color scheme chosen to connect all the blocks together or just pick a color scheme for each separate block?

No specific color theme. You can do scrappy or find colors that coordinate. I am using about 8 different colors, using up fabrics from another project.
