During 2020 we will be doing blocks from the “One Hundred and one Patchwork Patterns” book by Ruby Short McKim. The book was published in 1931, and my husband’s maternal Grandmother learned to quilt from this book. These blocks are done in her honor.
This month’s block is Grandmother’s Cross.
The original block had lots of “Y” seams, which I have removed to make our block easier to piece together. There were templates to create the block with these y seams.
Our block will use templates to create the points of the cross. The original size was 12″ finished block, and our block will finish at the same size (12 ½” unfinished).
Fabric Requirements
Yellow – 3″ x 3″
Blue – 6″ x 6″
Purple – 8″ x 14″
Pink – 13″ x 15″
Fabric Cutting
Piecing using Templates
Print one copy of the Template PDF, making sure to check the 1″ block to make sure the pdf printed the correct size.
- Cut four Rectangles from Piece 1 and four Rectangles from Piece
- Make sure that you have the four pieces of each facing the same direction when cutting. Have the right sides up when cutting the four pieces of each
- Cut four triangles from piece 2.
Assembly
Piecing from templates – you will repeat this 4 times for the four sides of the block
- Using 2 pink rectangles one from each set (opposites)
- Using 1 purple triangle.
Sew Piece 2 (triangle) to left side of piece 1 (pink), press seams toward Piece 1(pink)
Sew Piece 2 to the right side of Piece 3, press seams towards piece 3.
Trim piece to 2 7/8″ x 7 3/4″
You will need to repeat these steps to create a total of Four pieces.
Layout the pieces per this layout, then sew them together.
- Sew row 1 (top three pieces) together
- Sew 9 pieces in middle together, and then add the two side pieces to the outside
- Sew row 2 (bottom three pieces) together
Sew the three rows together to finish the block.
Press Seams, and you have completed the Grandmother’s Cross.
