December 2019 ~ Gift BOM

It’s time for our last Bom for 2019.  It’s beginning to “Look a lot like Christmas”, well in the United States the stores have been carrying Christmas items since October.   I know we have members of our group from around the world, and not all celebrate Christmas, so I wanted to create a block that everyone will enjoy.   This Christmas Present, can be made with all kinds of fabric for all kinds of holidays. I have created using 1” finished squares, but you can use strips or fussy cut fabric for the four parts.

Fabric

  • Multiple fabrics for the 48 – 1 ½” squares for the package
  • Red Fabric (Ribbon) – Fat Quarter
  • White Fabric (Background) – Fat Quarter

Note: Instead of using the small pieces, you can use 1 ½” strips, that are 4 ½” long or you can fussy cut fabric, cutting the pieces 4 ½” long by 3 ½” .

Cutting Pieces

Assembly

Bow – Using the two 3” x 2 ¼” pieces of Background and Ribbon fabric.

Take one piece of each color, and cut diagonally from bottom right color to the upper left corner.  Then take the other two pieces of each color and cut diagonally from the bottom left to upper left corner.  This will create two sets of triangles.

Matching the front’s together, match one background to one ribbon fabric.  Match the layout in the picture below. You will only need one of each set (you will have two pieces of each fabric as extras).

NOTE: make sure that the triangles are opposite, and match the layout of the picture, otherwise you will end up with two identical squares.

Stitch ¼” seam along the long sides of the triangles, then press open, pressing to the dark side.

Sew the two squares together, with the background fabrics together, press. Sew this piece to the 4 ½” x 2 ¼” piece of background fabric.   Then using the two 4 ½” x 3 ½” background pieces, attaching one on each side.

Package assembly

  • Layout 12 pieces of the various fabrics for the packages.  Then sew together in a row of 4 x 3 pieces. Create 4 of these.  They will measure 4 ½” x 3 ½”
  • Using the two 3 ½” x 1 ½” ribbon pieces, and the 9 ½” x 1 ½” ribbon pieces, layout the pieces in the format and sew together.
  • Sew the top three pieces together, and the bottom three pieces together and then sew the three rows together.

Using the two background pieces of 7 ½” x 2” pieces, sew one (C) to each short side of the blocks.

Sew the 12 ½” x 2 ½” piece to the bottom of this block. (D)

Sew the block created in the first step to the top of these blocks.

Press the seams.  You have completed your December BOM!

Your block is now assembled, and ready to post on the Quilting BOM FaceBook group.
