It’s All Up to You! – Hexi Quilt

The Island Batik March Challenge is “All up to You”.  We get to choose the project that we want to make.

I’ve decided to make two projects this month.  This is the Second one. I decided to use some of the Island Batik fabric that I had left from a previous project. The fabric I used for the quilt was given to me by Island Batik, and is the Winter 2021 Collection, “Savannah” by Tammy Silvers by Tamarinis.

The fabric, and batting were given to me free from Island Batik and its partners,  Hobbs Batting, Aurifil Thread and Schmetz Needles, as my role as a 2024 Island Batik Ambassador.

I decided that I wanted to create a Hexi Quilt, but I didn’t want to mess with “y” seams, so I created the quilt using a Half Hexi Ruler that I purchased from Missouri Star Quilt company a few years ago.  The ruler is made to use 2 1/2″ strips of fabric.

I cut the fabric into 2 1/2″ strip.  Then using a Half Hexi ruler, I cut the strips into Half Hexi’s.  I sorted the pieces into same fabric groups.

I did keep the partial pieces, as long as they were at over 1/2 the size of the half Hexi.  I used these for ends of rows, to make the strip straight, without having to cut and waist other pieces.

I then laid out the pieces into rows.  This let me match the Half Hexi pieces to create a full size Hexi.  I wanted a scrappy look, so this let me move pieces as needed to get the look I wanted.

I then sewed the rows together, creating strips of fabric.

After I finished each row, I made sure that the pieces were still in the layout that I wanted, and then pressed the seams.  I alternated pressing the seams on the rows so they would nest together.

After all the pieces were sown together, to the size I wanted, I squared the ending pieces to be a straight line.

I then added a 2 1/2″ strip of the coordinating fabric, creating a small border.

Then I added a 6″ strip of black fabric to create another border. (I forgot to take a picture.)

The top was finished, and I had several half Hexi pieces left over, so I created a smaller Hexi block. I used some smaller black fabric for two of the end sides of the rows, to create a point.  This was 29″ x 32″, so I added black fabric around it to create the top to 70″ x 82″. The larger size gives me the fabric to long arm without an issue.  Here is a picture of part of the back.

I used Hobbs Premium Black Cotton Batting for the quilt.  I had received this black batting, and most of my quilts use light fabric, so I use the lighter batting, however, this is a black quilt so it would work great.

The one thing with working with black front, black back, and black batting along with black thread, is if you need to pull out the thread, it is a little harder.  You need lots of light when working with it.  The quilting pantograph I used, worked great, and had only a couple times I needed to pull a few threads.

I quilted the top on my Juki Longarm, with Aurifil Black Thread, with a design from Quilting Pantographs, called Coral Meander.  I liked this design as it was able to quilt all over the top.

I used scraps from the back to make the binding, to finish the quilt.

The quilt top finished at 60″ x 82″

Here is the Front of the finished quilt.
