Funky Friends! Soft Toys

The April Island Batik Challenge was to create a “Funky Friends” soft toys. I decided to create the “Silly Scrap Snake“, this is a beginner pattern.

I picked this pattern, because my dogs love to play with toys, so this would be fun watching them run around with the Snake.  When you purchase the pattern it comes in one size, however, you can use a printer to reduce the size of the pattern.  I reduced the size a little bit, so the snake scrap body could be made with some of my Island Batik Stash Builder sets, of 5″ x 40″ strips.

You can make the Snake in the original length of 60″ long, or you can make shorter, or longer, depending on how many strips you add to the snake.

The pattern comes with printable sewing pattern, a full list of fabric needed, as well as instructions.  The website has photo-tutorials for additional help. I was able to view the Silly Snake Tutorial.

The fabric and Funky Friends pattern were given to me free as my role as a 2024 Island Batik Ambassador, by Island Batik and their Partner Funky Friends Factory.

This was a basic pattern, and as a toy for my dogs, I decided that I need to make it “squeak”, so I added some squeakers that I purchased online.  While adding these to the snake, I did have to add extra stuffing, to hide them in the snake, so it was stiffer than I had planned.

When adding the body, you can keep adding more fabrics to make it longer.

The one thing I did decide, when I make another one, I am going to add sew the eyes on the head piece, before I assemble the snake, so it is easier to stitch the felt on the face.  It may have been easier if I had made the full size, instead of shrinking it.

Here is the Head with the eyes.

The tongue is sewn in, it is also cut out of felt.

Here is my completed Silly Scrap Snake.

As I said, I made the snake as a toy for my dogs.  Here is our 9-month old puppy playing with the snake.
