Assembly

NOTE: The instructions are for paper piecing of the block, however, you can print the templates and piece the blocks together in the same order, without the paper.

When sewing along the lines for paper piecing it is always a good idea to reduce the stitch width on your sewing machine, to make it easier to remove the paper.

Paper Piecing – Print the Paper Piecing file, tape or glue the pieces for the top ½ together and the pieces for the bottom half together. (see picture)

Fold each along each line folding towards the front of the paper, this will help with cutting the seam allowance as you go

Take top of umbrella and on the back,  Hold piece “H” with backside to paper, or use a glue stick to hold in place.

Fold the left side of section “H” forward, so you can cut a ¼” seam allowance. Then repeat for right side.

Using piece “I”, lay right side down to piece “H”, so that the right-sides are together.  Make sure that you have enough room on both ends of the piece so when you fold you are able to cover the correct space.

Holding together, turn over and sew along the line between “H” and “I”.

After sewing the along the line, turn over and press press the piece open.

Repeat adding piece “G” to the opposite side of piece “H”.

Repeat the steps by trimming the seam allowances for pieces “G” and “I” to the quarter inch seam allowance and the add “J” and “K” to the piece.  Then add pieces “D” and “A”

Trim the seam allowance to ¼” after adding Pieces “A” and “D”, along all three sides.

Using the bottom half of the block (Stand, sand and sky), start with piece “F” face up on back of the paper, adding pieces “B” and “E” (SKy) to both sides, and trim the seam allowances as you go.  Then add piece “C” to bottom, then trim the seam allowances to ¼” on all three sides.

Lay the two pieces together and sew a ¼” seam along the long diagonal side.

Press seams open.

Carefully tear the paper off the back of the blocks, making sure to not remove any stitches. (This is why you change the stitch width, and the thinner the paper the better).

Press the block to smooth out the seams after removing the paper.

Your block Beach Umbrella is now done and ready to post on the Quilting BOM FaceBook group.
