2022 New Design Wall

This past November, we closed on our new home, and I was so excited, because I would finally have a dedicated Quilting Room, my Quilting Studio. I figured I would finally be able to get organized and find my fabric and tools I need. Here are some pictures as I was just starting to move things there, and look at “all that space”, well it felt like that.

Ok, maybe that will happen some day, but I am more organized then I was in our old house in the small bedroom, hallway, living room, and dining room. Quilting Studio is still a mess right now, so when I get it “cleaned up”, I’ll show you a picture. Do Quilting rooms every get really “clean” and “organized”?

Back to my Design wall, there are two doors in the room, one goes out onto the porch, so I am not able to stack stuff on that wall. In the picture below, see the closet wall that the door opens towards, wasted space, or “design wall”?

I have been using it as a “design wall”, so I had somewhere to hang my quilt blocks or quilt tops. I was using my Clover clips taped to the wall to hold my quilt pieces, so I can take pictures.

“Old Design wall”

I have been wanting to do something different, so the quilts don’t fall to the floor while I am trying to take a picture. Painter’s tape doesn’t always hold the best when adding a lot of weight, or the clips just pull out. I would stop for the night, and come back in the morning to several of the pieces laying on the floor because the clips pulled out from the tape.

This past week, my husband helped me cut some boards to put up on the wall, so we could attach some metal grids to the wall.

Updated Design wall.

I can now hang my quilt pieces, blocks, and quilts on this “design wall” so I can see if I like how it looks, or to take pictures.

Originally these grids were purchased for my son to use at the flea market when he was selling his plants last year. They have been “hanging” around my quilting room, collecting dust, so I thought they would work great. Unfortunately, there are only 3, and I could use three more, and when I went back to Amazon to get more, they are no longer carrying those same ones. I will find more, and get it extended down, but for now it works great, and I am loving it.

Here is my quilt from February, Blog Hop, Row-by-Row. It has been hanging for about a week with no issues. I can’t wait until I work on my next full-size quilt and can hang them on the wall with no more green tape.

Do you have a design wall? If so, I would love to see what yours looks like. If you don’t have a design wall, how do you layout your quilt blocks to see how everything is looking?

If you want to learn to quilt, and live in East Texas, lets get together and create something, just drop me a message.

Next project in the quilting room is to find a way to display all my antique sewing machines, so I can enjoy them, instead of them hiding under tables, in corners or in the hallway. Any suggestions?

In the meantime, back to working on designing my August 2022, Island Batik quilt(s). I can’t wait to show them to you in a couple weeks.

  1. Hi Lisa I love your new space congratulations. My sewing room is an organized cluttered mess, every time I try to tidy it… I can’t find anything lol. My design wall is most of the time folded and stored in it’s carry bag, it came with a portable frame that stands on its own… big mistake my space is too small to accommodate so I use the flannel over the main frame and just prop it against stuff, it is big enough for a twin or full size… not a Queen .. so if it is a big quilt the living room floor is it.

    1. My sewing room is always a miss organized. After we moved, I thought I was “organized” and put things in places. I can still tell you were it was in my tiny sewing room at the old house, but have no idea where things went in the new one.

  2. Hi Lisa! Your Quilting Studio has a lot of potential! And you are correct, Quilting Studios are never tidy and organized. If, on the rare occasion, it happens, it only lasts a day! LOL!
My design wall is 2″ foam, covered with flannel. It works great! Before I had it, I used a flannel backed tablecloth that I laid out on a queen bed. I could roll it up and the pieces stayed in place!
    Happy Quilting!
